📒 Teaching with PowerNotes

So you’ve got access to PowerNotes, great! The first thing you’ll want to understand is what kind of access you have. Typically, if you’re teaching with PowerNotes you’ll be using one of three methods:

  1. Individual Plan - our lowest cost option that simply gives access to PowerNotes’ core features
  2. Classroom Plan - a great option for single classrooms that includes our core features and AI plus access to a manageable PowerNotes Community
  3. Institutional Plan (LMS Integration) - with this plan, teachers can connect directly to the major LMS platforms (Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle) and have access to all the features in the previous tiers including core features, AI, and Communities

Setting Up Research Projects

To enhance your students' research process, you can set requirements for the number of sources and annotations they need to use and track their progress with Insight scores. Additionally, you can enable Discovery AI tools to boost their ability to find and evaluate sources effectively. Another helpful approach is to add source notes to assignment templates, guiding students away from unreliable sources and towards reputable ones.

Setting Up Group Projects

Easily set up group projects using PowerNotes' sharing and collaboration features. Evaluate each group member's contribution using the Activity Log, eliminating scenarios where one individual carries the entire group or someone slacks off and relies on others. You can learn how to set up Assignments here.

🔎 User Types

Teaching in Higher Education

If you teach information literacy, research projects, textual analysis, or any project that asks students to read, find and track resources, use evidence from the reading and research, and/or synthesize that information, then PowerNotes can help you do it. PowerNotes gives students the ability to read, track, annotate, and synthesize any source on the web and gives you the ability to see that process in action.

With upgraded LMS and AI features, you can help your students learn to use AI as an assistant in their research and writing work and track their progress using our Insight score.

Teaching in K12 (Middle + High School)

PowerNotes can help you provide structured, just-in-time guidance to students who are on any Level of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Using PowerNotes when students are remembering and understanding what research is, what best practices are, how to tell what information is reliable gives you a chance to provide frameworks and feedback during the process instead of after.

With upgraded LMS and AI features, you can help your students learn to use AI as an assistant in their research and writing work and track their progress using our Insight score. AI Literacy is the literacy of the future, and PowerNotes can help you teach it in a safe and secure digital space.

Teaching Information Literacy

If you teach information literacy, and focus on skills like learning how to form a research question; develop search terms; do library research; evaluate sources for credibility, bias, and usefulness;

Using PowerNotes Topics with PowerNotes LMS Integration can help you help your students create outlines by giving them the sections you want but leaving space for them to highlight and take notes in any way they need. Bookmarks allow students to capture entire pages, but with the added benefit of being able to annotate the bookmark (i.e. “this page is useful because…”, and of being able to add source notes to each source (i.e. this source has significant bias in these regards; compare additional source XYZ).

Administrators

PowerNotes can help you support your faculty by providing them with a look into the student research and writing process. With upgraded LMS integration and AI features, instructors can also keep track of the progress of large numbers of students and guide students through using AI to assist with their work.

For example, the ability to see the activity log for individual students can help you navigate student and instructor conflicts, specifically over AI, with real evidence of work done (or not done).

You also don’t have to launch this kind of support yourself; PowerNotes subscriptions come with implementation support.

Distance Educators / Instructional Designers

PowerNotes is a backward designer’s dream. The flexibility of the tool allows for streamlining of scaffolding in a way that reduces the cognitive load in a space and with a student population where students are often already overloaded. With upgraded LMS and AI features, you can help your students learn to use AI to assist in their research and writing work and track their progress using our Insight score.
