In-person (1h15 minute class period)

0:00-0:05 - Attendance, settling in

0:05-0:025  - Brainstorming Interests

You could do this one of two ways:

1. Focus on student interests more broadly (within or outside of your content), or;

2. Have students focus on specific content areas in your class.

1. If you’re letting students choose any topic they want, you can use the questions verbatim. If you’re having students focus on their interests within the specific content you’re teaching, you can adapt them. For example, the first question could become “What are your favorite websites to visit for information on environmental science? Why?” you could also rewrite the fourth question to be “What kind of hobbies do you have related to environmental science?” or question seven might be “Where would you most like to travel? What sort of environmental issues are of concern there?”

Potential Topic Brainstorming Questions:

  1. What are your favorite websites and why?
  2. What is your ideal career, profession, vocation, or job?
  3. What are your favorite academic subjects?
  4. What sorts of hobbies interest you?
  5. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
  6. What civic/community clubs or activities are you involved in?
  7. Where in the world would you most like to travel?
  8. What sorts of political issues concern/interest you?
  9. What sorts of social issues concern/interest you?
  10. What current events concern/interest you?
